‘At Land’ by Maya Deren
"At Land" by Maya Deren is a seminal 15-minute silent experimental film from 1944, written, directed, and starring the visionary filmmaker Maya Deren. The film’s surreal, dream-like narrative follows a woman, played by Deren, who is washed ashore and embarks on an enigmatic journey, encountering both others and multiple versions of herself along the way.
At our screenings, this iconic film is brought to life through a live, improvised soundscape performed by "her&her"(Catherine Shrubshall and collaborator), with an underscoring soundtrack created in partnership with Richard Kett, who also engineered and produced the sound. The atmospheric blend of live music and improvisation provides a unique sensory experience, enhancing the film's haunting visuals and themes.
We also encourage audiences to join us for a post-screening discussion, offering a chance to explore the film's significance, our live soundtrack process, and the creative vision behind the project.
